Sulcorebutia tiraquensis v. australis wurde 1986 von Walter Rausch nach seinem Fund R729 von der Straße Mizque – Arani als S. steinbachii v. australis beschrieben. 1989 beschrieb Swoboda eine Sulcorebutia mariana. Nachdem zu den beiden Taxa sowohl Details, als auch Pflanzenmaterial bekannt wurde, war klar, dass es sich in beiden Fällen um die gleichen Pflanzen handelte. Der Name „mariana“ blieb allerdings vorerst erhalten, da er trotz der späteren Publikation im Artrang Priorität hat.

Rauschs älterer Name kam erst wieder zur Geltung, als Gertel & de Vries (2007) diese Pflanzen innerhalb einer Subspezies mariana, als Varietät zu S. tiraquensis stellten. Das Verbreitungsgebiet dieser Varietät liegt im südlichen Teil der oben erwähnten Straße in Höhen von 2600 – 2800m.

Niemand wird bestreiten, dass S. tiraquensis v. australis eine sehr attraktive Sulcorebutia ist. Noch weniger wird irgendwer in Frage stellen, dass sie herrliche Blüten hat. Sie sind meist rot mit etwas gelb im Schlund, rotgelb bis orangegelb. Einzelne Blüten erreichen schon mal einen Durchmesser von 6 – 6,5cm.

Das ist nicht der einzige Superlativ mit dem diese Pflanzen aufwarten können. Auch die Samen gehören (oder es sind die größten….) zu den größten der Gattung. Einzelne Samen können bis zu 2mm lang und 1,8mm breit werden.

Die Vorkommen von S. tiraquensis v. australis sind meist nicht sehr reichhaltig. Gelegentlich wurde auch schon verkündet, die eine oder andere Population sei ausgestorben. Vielleicht hängt es auch damit zusammen, dass sich diese relativ kleinen Pflanzen, die am äußersten, südlichen Ende des Verbreitungsgebietes von S. tiraquensis ssp. wachsen, kaum noch von den aus Nordosten kommenden Nebelschwaden profitieren. Das hat zur Folge, dass sie sich in der Trockenzeit tief in die Erde zurückziehen, von den Blättern der allgegenwärtigen Eukalyptusbäume bedeckt und dadurch unauffindbar werden.

Meist kennt man S. steinbachii v. australis mit kurzen, pektinat anliegenden Dornen. Wie schon die Typuspflanzen von Rausch und Swoboda zeigen, ist das allerdings nicht d i e typische „australis“ oder „mariana“. Man erkennt ziemlich deutlich die Verbindung zu der weiter nördlich vorkommenden S. tiraquensis v. laui, die wesentlich robuster bedornt ist und deutlich kleinere Blüten hat.

Ähnlich wie entlang der Straße Totora – Omereque, also zwischen S. tiraquensis v. totorensis und v. augustinii, erkennt man auch hier unschwer eine in Nord–Süd–Richtung (entlang den entsprechenden Bergzügen) verlaufende Entwicklungslinie von groß und kräftig bedornt bis anliegend bedornt und zierlich.

Es ist leicht vorstellbar, dass dies mit dem unterschiedlichen, durchschnittlichen Wasserangebot zu tun hat. Das suggeriert auch die verschieden starke Ausprägung der Wurzelrüben. Möglicherweise hat auch die Höhenlage einen gewissen Einfluss.

Diese unterschiedlichen Merkmale sind zweifelsohne schon genetisch verankert, denn sie gelten für Wildpflanzen ebenso wie für aus Samen gezogene Kulturpflanzen.
